Helmsdale Lodge and Hostel is located in the scenic coastal village of Helmsdale in north east Sutherland, Scotland.

It is in a prominent position at the north end of the village and is on the main NC500 and Land End John o' Groats routes. It is also half way between Inverness and the Orkney ferries.

There are six en-suite bedrooms - each bedroom sleeping up to four people. A fully equipped self-catering kitchen with complimentary tea, coffee, sugar and milk. A spacious open plan dining and lounge area, log burning stove, central heating, drying rooms, laundry facilities and free wifi. A large garden to relax outdoors and a secure cycle shed. Car-parking is free on the roadside next to the property.

The building is the former village school gymnasium built in 1931. It is an extremely individual structure and refurbishments since private ownership have been sympathetic in efforts to retain its originality. The high ceilings and general layout of the building creates a spacious light and airy atmosphere.

Irene - Owner
From a young age, Irene's father introduced her to Scottish Hostelling and long-distance cycle touring. As a child she can still recall defiantly saying to her father ‘if there is another hill I am not moving’ - nonetheless with his encouragement they always made their destination! She remains an avid cyclist and has toured extensively through the UK, Europe, America, Canada and Asia. Next trip on her list is Tennessee and New Orleans - any advice from fellow cyclists welcome! Irene is also interested in bee keeping, bronze casting, woodworking and has completed a furniture making course in Maine, USA.

Marie - Manager
Marie’s started out her career as a Medical Scientist. She later trained as a Psychotherapist and using her skills within health and social work, she helped develop a professional community counselling service which she remains involved with. Marie also enjoys the great outdoors and has a passion for travelling and meeting people. She is also a keen cook and renowned for producing culinary delights from a basic camping stove on her many sea-kayaking and cycling trips.

Arriving by bus: The Hostel is on the main Citylink bus routes. The bus stop is a two minute walk away from the property.

Arriving by train: The railway line runs from Inverness through Golspie, Brora, Helmsdale and then on to Wick and Thurso). [Cross over the old bridge, turn right along Dunrobin Street, then left up up Stafford Street. The Hostel is then a two minute walk away.]
